My work is watercolour/pencil/collage. I have various themes to which I return - the sea, water, towers, prehistoric sites, ceramic objects and natural forms. I used to have a lot of tigers in my work as they kept following me about in my dreams. They are now gone presumably to bother someone else.. I draw people occasionally but prefer cats, dinosaurs and toys as subject material...
I try to look at lots of paintings and illustrations - not so much as to be influenced by them, but to learn how other artists see and interpret things. I love museums and galleries and like to look at pictures as closely as possible to get near to the artist. I can lose myself in a painting in exactly the same way as I got lost in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland on my first reading, I think I've been there ever since.
I love art from the Northern Renaissance period, Leonardo da Vinci, William Blake, Paul Nash, Stanley Spencer, Jackson Pollock, Balthus and Hieronymus Bosch.
I read a great deal and am often as stimulated to make pictures through my reading as I am by what I see. My inner eye sees as much as my outer eyes....
I usually work from a mixture of observation and photographs I have taken. I am not tough enough to stand on the seashore and draw in this country. I collect objects to include in my drawings and pictures. I always try to listen to music as I work. Music is very important to me but nothing without words.
